P and I went out the other day for her birthday. Her oldest, H, was in school and so we dropped off the other 4 at a sitter for SIX hours. Did you hear that right? SIX hours. We dropped at 9am and headed out. The silence was weird. We got to talk about things that we couldn't normally say in front of the children. We could talk without interrupting ourselves to yell at the children. No talking over them. No directing them. No answering questions. It was quiet a lot of the time. We realized that normally our conversations revolve around them. It was so delightful just getting to sit with her in the car and drive. Not having to make or hear any noise. We got to our destination after a (not so) quick stop to check out a new car for me, of which i ended up buying. We had a wonderful lunch of... teppanyaki... there was no choice... so they knew what they were doing... at least with the teppanyaki. We stuffed ourselves and overstuffed ourselves some more and headed out to do some shopping. Of course, we got the kids some gifts... and headed back to pick them up. It was the fastest 6 hours of my life.
